The pandemic has made us realize how uncertain the world is. Starting in single digit numbers in early 2020, the number of Covid positive cases has reached 4,30,36,132* in India alone. Although around 80 crores* people are vaccinated completely, there’s a long way to go.
We can undoubtedly say healthcare should be every person’s priority, individually and in the community.
Keeping this in mind, the PM Cares Fund, or the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund, was set up as a public charitable trust in 2020. The main goal is to be prepared in the event of any public health or calamity, natural or artificial.
We all have been hearing the heartfelt stories of people sending their last bit of savings to the fund to their bit to help the others. People have been using payment apps, foreign money transfers/wire, and other ways to send money to the fund.
According to government sources, the fund raised around 7103.99 crores in 2020-21.
Uses of the PM Cares fund
A significant share of the fund has been used to:
- Provide Ventilators to Government hospitals
- Allotted to State and UT (Union Territories) for the welfare of the citizens
- For establishing more makeshift hospitals to accommodate patients
- For procuring vaccine
- For research purposes and testing/release of Covid 19 vaccines
